The home of the Mediterranean Diet

The Study Centre on the Mediterranean Diet was opened in Pollica in 2010, the same year the Mediterranean Diet was recognised as UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity. It is named after Angelo Vassallo, the "fisherman mayor" of Pollica, to whose tireless work that recognition is largely owed.

It is based in the historic Palazzo Capano, in the heart of the village of Pollica. The centre develops policies and projects to promote the Mediterranean Diet not only as a sound nutritional model, but as a shared cultural heritage, made of products, landscapes, knowledge and relationships to be protected and enhanced.

Research, outreach, training and events make Pollica one of the "emblematic communities" recognised by UNESCO for the Mediterranean Diet, alongside places in Spain, Greece, Morocco and other countries of the basin.
