The history and traditions linked to artisanal fishing are still alive today in the charming villages of Cilento thanks to the small-scale fishermen who preserve and pass them on. In Acciaroli and Pioppi the sea is not just scenery: it is a trade, an identity and the memory of entire generations.
This community is a true open-air laboratory for the enhancement and protection of artisanal fishing, the waters and the coasts of Cilento. Selective, low-impact fishing goes hand in hand with care for the sea and with the quality of the catch that arrives every day on the tables of the Mediterranean Diet.
Among the traditional techniques, the menaica stands out, an ancient wide-mesh net used to fish for anchovies: it catches only the larger fish and lets the smaller ones through, in a perfect balance between man and sea. From this know-how also comes fishing tourism, which lets visitors spend a day aboard with the fishermen.
